About this examination

Why mammography may be requested

Mammography may be part of a screening programme or used to assess a symptom or finding. These are different clinical pathways, and a clinician can explain which examination is appropriate.

Confirm the examination type

Check the referral or speak with your clinician to understand whether screening or diagnostic imaging is intended. Contact the centre to confirm what is available and which instructions apply.

Before you visit

Tell the clinician or imaging team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. Contact the centre before visiting to confirm the examination type, availability, any referral requirements and preparation instructions.

Further information

Read NHS information on breast screening mammograms and tests after a breast change. This page is a general summary, not personal medical advice. Follow your clinician’s advice.

Common questions

Questions about Mammography.

General answers based on patient guidance. Your clinician or imaging team can confirm what applies to your examination.

Mammography

What happens during mammography?

The breast is positioned on the X-ray machine and briefly compressed between plates while images are taken. Ask the clinician or imaging team whether your referral is for screening or diagnostic imaging and what it involves.

Can mammography feel uncomfortable?

The brief compression can feel uncomfortable or painful for some people. Tell the mammographer if you are worried or have found it difficult before; they can explain the steps and support you.

How should I prepare for a mammogram?

Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist upwards and follow the instructions for your appointment. NHS screening guidance advises avoiding deodorant, antiperspirant and talcum powder on the day because they may affect images; check with the centre for your examination.
