ECG

An ECG (electrocardiogram) records the electrical activity of the heart, including its rate and rhythm.

Electrocardiograph equipment used to record heart electrical activity.

About this examination

What an ECG records

An ECG records electrical signals produced by the heart. It is different from an echocardiogram, which uses ultrasound to create images of the heart. The clinician determines which test is appropriate for the clinical question.

There are different types of ECG

ECGs can be recorded at rest, over a period of time with a portable monitor, or during exercise. These are different examinations; this page does not imply that every type is available at the centre. Confirm the exact ECG requested when arranging your visit.

Before you visit

Contact the centre to check current availability, referral requirements, which type of ECG is arranged and whether any instructions apply.

ECG

What does an ECG record?

An ECG records the heart’s electrical activity, including its rate and rhythm. The clinician who requested the test interprets the result with your symptoms and other information.

Does an ECG hurt?

A resting ECG is usually quick and painless. Sticky electrodes are placed on the skin to record the heart’s signals; removing them may cause slight discomfort, similar to removing a plaster.

How should I prepare for a resting ECG?

Wear a top that is easy to remove and avoid putting lotion, oil or talcum powder on your skin beforehand. Other ECG types, such as exercise or portable monitoring, have different instructions.
