About this examination
How echocardiography works
A probe sends sound waves into the body and receives echoes that are used to create images of the heart. This is different from an ECG, which records the heart’s electrical activity rather than making ultrasound images.
The type of echo can vary
There are different types of echocardiogram, and instructions can depend on the type requested. The clinician determines which examination is appropriate. Ask the centre to confirm the exact type available before arranging your appointment.
Contact the centre to confirm current availability, referral requirements, the type of echocardiogram requested and any preparation instructions.
