Liver FibroScan

Liver FibroScan is a name commonly used for a non-invasive liver stiffness assessment using transient elastography.

Equipment used for a non-invasive liver elastography examination.

About this examination

What transient elastography measures

Vibration-controlled transient elastography is a special type of ultrasound used to measure liver stiffness. Increased stiffness may be associated with liver fibrosis. The measurement is one part of a clinical assessment and does not, by itself, explain the cause of a result or provide a complete diagnosis.

Results need clinical interpretation

A clinician interprets the measurement alongside a person’s history and other relevant information. The exact technique and any preparation can vary, so instructions should come from the clinician and the centre arranging the examination.

Before you visit

Ask the centre to confirm whether this examination is available, whether a referral is required and what preparation applies to your appointment.

Liver FibroScan

What does a FibroScan measure?

A FibroScan, also called transient elastography, measures liver stiffness. This can help a clinician assess whether there may be liver scarring, alongside other clinical information.

Is a FibroScan painful?

A patient guide describes the examination as not painful or uncomfortable. You lie on your back while a probe with gel is placed against the skin over the liver area and takes repeated measurements.

How should I prepare for a FibroScan?

Preparation instructions can vary. One NHS hospital leaflet advises not eating for three hours beforehand, while allowing clear fluids and regular medicines with water. Confirm the instructions for your appointment with the centre.
